Basic Skills Every Business Owner Should Have

Business owners — particularly small business owners — are as diverse a lot as they come. Once you get beyond “traditional” diversity factors (ie: race, gender, etc), you realize that HOW a business owner operates a business is almost as unique as a snowflake (ie: no two are alike).

But here are some core qualities every business owner should have. They include:

  • Being able to effectively delegate — This doesn’t mean just passing work off, it means follow up too. Too many people operate with an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality and that’s a big mistake.

  • Following through — You’re an idea guy/gal? Great! Good for you. How many of your ideas get developed and launched? Without the ability to follow through, your ideas will just float away to the Island of Forgotten Thoughts, never to be seen again.

  • Being creative — No two days are alike when you run a business. If you’re creative, you can roll with the quotidian headaches far better than if you’re rigid.

  • Being able to manage your time — You will be pulled in a hundred different directions at times. How do you ensure that what needs to get done actually gets done?

Think about these skills and ask yourself — honestly — how many of them you have.
